Social workers empower individuals, relieve suffering, and affect social change. They help meet the basic needs of all people and strengthen those who are vulnerable, oppressed, or living in poverty. One of the best parts about social work is that curiosity and exploration are encouraged. Most students enter the program without a set job in mind, only with an excitement to learn how best to make a difference in the world.

Accreditation

The Grace Abbott School of Social Work's MSW and BSSW programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Accreditation is reaffirmed by the CSWE on a 7-year cycle. Our BSSW program has been continuously accredited since 1975 and is currently accredited through 2029. The MSW program has been continuously accredited since 1940 and is currently accredited through 2029.

Undergraduate (BSSW) Degree Program

The application process for admission to the BSSW program requires submission of an NUID number, personal statement, resume, and three professional references. The personal statement is a key component, allowing applicants an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the social work profession, commitment to social justice, self-reflection, and alignment with the field’s core values. Follow this link to review the specific criterion for admission to the BSSW program. Students pursuing a (BSSW) degree should apply to the program during the second semester of their sophomore year.

The BSSW application opens January 15, 2026.

Graduate (MSW) Degree Program

Students may enter at the MSW program at the foundation level (63 credit hours) if their undergraduate degree is in a field other than social work or at the advanced standing level (39 credit hours) if they have a BSW/BSSW. With courses offered in-person, remotely, and fully online, the program provides flexible scheduling options to accommodate students' needs. All MSW applicants are encouraged to submit their application approximately one year in advance of their anticipated start date.

To begin your MSW program in Fall 2025, apply by April 01, 2025. Click here to start your Fall 2025 MSW application.

To begin your MSW program in Fall 2026, apply between November 01, 2025 and March 01, 2026.
