Waiver Exams for Foundation Level Social Work Students

  1. UNO
  2. CPACS
  3. Grace Abbott School of Social Work
  4. Academic Planning
  5. Waiver Exams for Foundation Level Social Work Students

Generalist level MSW students may waive up to three social work courses: SOWK 8070 HBSE I, SOWK 8080 HBSE II, and SOWK 8090 Social Welfare Policy. Two waiver options are available:

  • Waiver by Equivalent Coursework In consultation with their academic advisor, students who have completed an equivalent course within an accredited BSW or MSW program may request a waiver. Supporting documentation is required, and the Graduate Program Chair (GPC) will make the final determination. This decision is not subject to appeal. Graduate credit is not given for undergraduate coursework or work experience.
  • Waiver by Examination In consultation with their academic advisor, students who have completed similar coursework may request permission from the Graduate Program Chair (GPC) to take a waiver exam. If approved, exams will be scheduled upon the student's request. Study guides are not provided; however, students may review the official course syllabus for the corresponding course to familiarize themselves with the content. A minimum score of 80% is required to earn the waiver. Waiver exams may only be attempted once.

Per CSWE accreditation standards, academic credit cannot be granted for life or previous work experience in place of practicum or other coursework.

Waiver exams are administered in person on the UNO campus and coordinated by the GASSW Student Services Associate, Sonia Carbonell. Exams are scheduled Monday through Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., subject to availability.
