Research:

Dr. Bonsall explores the intersection of democratic transition legacies and globalization in shaping populist movements. Her book project argues that the formation of different cultural and institutional legacies during democratic transitions effects the way that the contemporary far-right appeal to voters. This work draws on political memories of dictatorship and democratization in Spain, Portugal, and Argentina, formed from a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods, including fieldwork in Portugal. Dr. Bonsall is also interested in research surrounding the links between politics and popular culture, as well as the economic determinants of the success of the populist far-right, particularly in Iberian politics.
