Scholarship Opportunities

Dunning Scholarship

The Department of History is pleased to offer Dunning scholarships to one undergraduate student pursuing a History major per year.

The scholarship could be used to cover any expense associated with attendance at UNO for a total maximum value up to $12,500.

Applicants must:

  • Be a History major in good standing
  • Be a junior or a senior
  • Have a 3.0+ GPA

Applications for the academic year Fall 2025 - Spring 2026 are due March 15, 2025.

Jo Ann Carrigan Scholarship

The UNO Department of History is pleased to offer the Jo Ann Carrigan Scholarship to incoming graduate students pursuing a Master's Degree in History every fall and spring semester of the academic year. The number of scholarships available during a given academic year may vary based on the availability of funding.

The scholarship will cover the tuition costs and associated fees of

  1. the recipient's first eighteen credit hours and
  2. the recipient's last three credit hours of course work - if completed within a four-semester time frame.

Award preference will be merit-based. To apply, the prospective student must indicate their interest in being considered for the scholarship by indicating “Y” to the question “Assistantship Interest?” in their graduate program application. The applicant pool will be subject to review by the Graduate Program Committee.

Incoming students who receive a graduate assistantship will generally not be eligible for this scholarship.

Graduate program application deadline for financial consideration for Fall 2025 is March 15, 2025.

Jerold Simmons Scholarship

The Jerold Simmons Scholarship in Public History recognizes the distinguished career of Dr. Simmons and his legacy in the fields of film history and constitutional history, as well as his strong support for the advancement of all forms of public history. The award celebrates an undergraduate student whose interests, coursework, experiences, and accomplishments intersect with those fields.

Applicants must:

  • Be a History Major of at least Junior standing
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Submit an essay of no more than 1000 words demonstrating interest in Public History or Film History or Constitutional History or plans for Graduate School in History

Essays for the academic year Fall 2025 - Spring 2026 are due March 15, 2025 via email to the History Department Chair Dr. Danielle Battisti dbattisti@unomaha.edu

Jerold Simmons Scholarship flier


Shuflata Master's Fellowship

The Shuflata Master's Fellowship is available to outstanding graduate students to support the successful completion of their Master's thesis or final portfolio project in history at UNO. Offered twice each academic year, applications are due:

October 15 (funding students completing the MA in the following Spring and Fall semesters)
March 15 (funding students completing the MA in the following Fall and Spring semesters)
