     Emergency                Urgency                Non-emergency

Emergency

An emergency is defined as a life-threatening situation and requires an immediate intervention or response. You do not need to wait for an appointment in this situation.

Examples of an emergency include, but are not limited to:

  • Suicidal/homicidal thoughts
  • Intent, or plans, or life-threatening behaviors

The nearest emergency room would also be a resource in this instance.

  • If you'd like assistance from a counselor, you may come to CAPS in 101 H&K Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.
  • On weekends, please immediately contact Public Safety at 402.554.2911, call 911, or go to the nearest hospital.

Urgency

An urgent situation is a non-life threatening, immediate situation where a student may feel psychologically or emotionally overwhelmed.

Examples of an urgent situation include, but are not limited to:

  • Grief and loss of significant people or relationships
  • Severe stress or anxiety over academic challenges
  • Intense feelings of sadness and lack of motivation without thoughts of suicide
  • Experiencing a recent traumatic event (e.g., a crime, natural disaster, sexual or physical assault)
  • Feeling persistently unsafe, a sense of impending doom or danger
  • Currently living without food, clothing, and/or shelter
  • Unable to care for yourself, such as not eating or sleeping for several days
  • Having withdrawal symptoms from drugs or alcohol (call 911 for medical assistance).
  • Experiencing uncontrollable panic and unable to calm down

If a student is in an urgent situation, they should call or visit CAPS to schedule an appointment at the earliest availability.

Non-emergency

A non-emergency can be any issue or problem of concern that students may face. These issues or concerns may include ongoing feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress, adjustments, transitions, conflicts, etc. A student can call or visit CAPS to schedule an appointment.
