As the policy for honorary degree indicates, the following guidelines are suggested in selecting honorary degree recipients:
- Persons who have rendered distinguished service to the University.
- Persons who have rendered distinguished service to the State of Nebraska.
- Graduates, former students, or former employees who have achieved distinction.
- Persons of high distinction with a record of scholarship, creativity, leadership, humanitarians or public service who are not necessarily associated with the university or the State of Nebraska.
Honorary degrees shall not be awarded to individuals who are currently employed by the University of Nebraska, an active member on the Board of Regents, or any person currently seeking or holding an elective state or federal office. In exceptional cases an award may be presented to retired faculty or staff members for career distinction achieved at the University of Nebraska. Required Documentation for Nomination.
Nominations are due October 31st. The UNO Honors and Awards Committee will review and evaluate all submitted nominations. The committee's recommendations will be forwarded to the Provost's Office by December 10th for further consideration and approval by the Board of Regents. Once approved, the UNO Office of the Chancellor will notify both the nominee and the nominator of the final decision. Honorary Degrees are presented during a UNO commencement ceremony.
