Let’s be real – no one wants to miss class, work, or a campus event due to illness.

As cold and flu season settles in, now is the time to focus on your well-being so that you can have a healthy college experience now and in the months ahead.

The medical experts at Nebraska Medicine UNO Health Center share a few easy tips Mavericks can follow to avoid germs and boost their immune system:

1. Avoid sharing items with others

If a classmate needs a pen, give them one they can keep instead of asking for it back. Never share toiletries or makeup, especially razors, eyeliners, lip balm, or anything that comes into direct contact with your skin.

2. Watch where you put your backpack

You carry it on campus all day – to classrooms, the student center, the bathroom, etc. Make sure you disinfect your backpack at the end of each day and wash it weekly. Never throw it on your bed or pillow when you get back from class, which could spread germs to your face or mouth when you go to sleep. Instead, hang your backpack on a chair or a hook in your room until you can clean it.

3. Get enough sleep

Sounds simple, right? Surprisingly, it takes a bit of time and effort to get this one right. Start by setting a bedtime and sticking to it. Yes, even on weekends! It will help your body get into a rhythm so that you can fall asleep easier. Aim to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep at night. Staying well-rested will boost your immune system and help you fight winter illnesses.

4. Drink more water

Increasing your fluid intake during the colder months prevents a dry nose and throat, loosens mucus, and helps your body circulate blood better to fight viruses. Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Stick to clear fluids as much as possible. Hot teas and chicken noodle soup are also great options.

5. Dress appropriately for the weather

Under or overdressing can affect your health. Check the weather app before you leave for the day and let it influence the way you dress. When temperatures are predicted to fluctuate, wear layers so that you can take them off or put them on as needed. Invest in a warm winter coat, hat, gloves, and earmuffs before winter arrives.

6. Practice self-care

If you happen to catch that pesky winter bug, take care of yourself. Keep basic over-the-counter medications handy and take them as directed. Self-isolate if you have a fever and remember to inform your professors if you need to miss class. Monitor your symptoms and see a doctor if you notice potential signs of COVID-19.

7. Get vaccinated

COVID-19 is still present in our community. Combine that with annual influenza, and we could be looking at a twindemic. The best way to protect yourself and others is to get vaccinated for both COVID-19 and the flu. The UNO Health Center offers both vaccines by appointment in the medical clinic.
