Understanding Transnational Tactical Innovation and Diffusion in Jihadist and Violent Right-Wing Extremist Recruitment and Fundraising
Objective/Purpose
This project aims to explore innovative methods used in the non-violent activities of violent extremist organizations (VEOs), focusing specifically on fundraising efforts. The researchers will assess the extent to which VEOs and their supporters are using emergent cryptocurrency technologies. The goal of this work is to generate an understanding of VEO fundraising tactics and how to disrupt them.
Methodology
This project will use archival historical material as well publicly available information repositories related to VEO fundraising and financing operations. The research team will use both quantitative content analysis and qualitative discourse analysis to identify relevant behaviors, assess the evolution of those behaviors, and track the development and diffusion of tactics over time. Additionally, social network analysis will be used to map the transnational diffusion of financing and fundraising tactics.
