  5. Social Work Field Practicum Experience for Students

For both undergraduate and graduate social work students, the field practicum is a critical component of experiential learning. This hands-on experience takes place in a community-based social service agency under the supervision of approved practitioners. Through structured coursework and professional oversight, the practicum experience is designed to provide students with learning opportunities aligned with their degree program and plan of study, ensuring the integration of theory, research, and practice.

  • Generalist Field Practicum
The generalist field practicum, required for undergraduate and generalist-level graduate students, emphasizes foundational knowledge and core processes essential to social work practice. Students engage with diverse models of intervention aimed at addressing social problems and effecting change at multiple levels of practice. This practicum provides a structured environment where students integrate research, theoretical knowledge, and practical skills in preparation for professional social work roles. The required generalist field practicum courses include SOWK 4410, 4420, 8160, and 8170.
  • Advanced Generalist Field Practicum
The advanced generalist field practicum is designed for graduate students with advanced standing, offering a combination of direct and indirect practice experiences. Students engage in clinical services with individuals, families, and small groups while also participating in broader professional activities such as supervision, administration, research, advocacy, and community organizing. In collaboration with their field supervisor, students develop a learning contract that guides their practicum experience, ensuring a tailored approach to their professional development. The required advanced generalist field practicum courses include SOWK 8400, 8410, and 8420.

Preparing for Field Practicum
Students preparing for their field practicum must complete a structured three-step process designed to ensure readiness for this critical component of their social work education. These steps include:

  1. Completion of the Passport to Field Practicum Orientation Modules – These modules provide essential foundational knowledge about field practicum expectations, policies, and professional responsibilities.
  2. Participation in the Virtual Field Practicum Fair – This event offers students the opportunity to explore potential placement sites, engage with field instructors, and gain insights into various practicum experiences.
  3. Field Practicum Advisement – Students receive guidance from a Field Practicum Advisor to assist in selecting an appropriate placement and navigating the practicum process. Students are assigned a Field Practicum Advisor based on the first letter of their last name. Advisors are available to answer questions and provide support throughout the field placement process.

Resources for Students

  • Field Practicum Manual – Review the manual for policies and procedures related to field practicum. It is updated periodically, so check back regularly to ensure compliance with current guidelines.

  • Field Practicum Planning Packet – Contains essential details, required activities, and necessary forms. Contact your assigned field practicum advisor for guidance.

  • Approved Agency List – The Field Practicum Office maintains a list of approved agencies for placement. However, agency availability may change. Ensure you are accessing the most current list. (Javascript must be enabled.)
  • Student Representation – A BSSW and MSW student serve field practicum committee as representatives for their respective programs. In addition to the GASSW Field Practicum Staff, students may reach out to their student representative for support.
    • BSSW Student Representative: Andrea Salisbury (asalisbury@unomaha.edu)

    • MSW Student Representative: Amber Godsey (agodsey@unomaha.edu)
