Background

Sonya Stejskal received my Bachelor of Arts in History and English (with minors in Religion and Education) from Creighton University and her Master of Arts in Asian Studies from New York University. She has been a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Princeton University, a Teaching Fellow at the Watson Institute at Brown University, and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Jadapur University in Calcutta, India.

Stejskal has taught for over 30 years in Millard Public Schools, Jakarta, Indonesia, and Council Bluffs Public Schools. She has been an Adjunct Faculty member at UNO for eight years and teaches World Civilizations I & II. She also offers a course on Modern Chinese History. Stejskal's experienced travel background influences her teaching, as she has traveled throughout Europe, Mexico, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, China, Singapore, Japan, India Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. She also participated in two photographic safaris in Kenya.

In 1997 and 1998 she worked with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) as a NGO Supervisor for the first municipal and national elections in Bosnia Herzogovina. In 2014 she was elected President of the Nebraska State Council for Social Studies. In addition to her travels, Stejskal enjoys having historical and political discussions with her colleagues, friends, and students. Her unofficial title is "Queen of Social Studies."
