Financial Support for College of Arts and Sciences Students

The College of Arts and Sciences provides scholarship assistance to prospective and current students based on merit or need.

Many departments within the College of Arts and Sciences offer financial assistance in the form of scholarships. Please contact the specific department for details.


Biology

Dr. Barbara Hayhome Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

This $1,400 scholarship is awarded to students during their final (senior) year as biology majors, molecular & biomedical biology majors, or environmental science majors (life sciences option). More than one may be awarded each year. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a minimum of 58 credit hours.

David Chesneau Memorial Scholarship

This $800 scholarship is awarded to a student during the final year as biology majors, molecular & biomedical biology majors, or environmental science majors (life sciences option.) Applicants must have a minimum of 18 credit hours in Biology courses, a minimum of 58 credit hours cumulative, and a minimum GPA of 3.3.

Dr. Merle E. Brooks Academic Achievement Award in Biology and/or Science Education

This $1,400 scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student majoring in a degree program in the Department of Biology or in Biology Education in the Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at UNO. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 overall and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in all coursework required in the major. Candidates desire to pursue a career in the area of plant sciences, limnology (aquatic ecology) and/or teaching biological sciences at the high school level following graduation from UNO.

Bertrand and Marian Othmer Schultz Collegiate Scholarship

A $3,000 scholarship offered through the Nebraska Academy of Sciences to be awarded to a junior or senior pursuing a major in the Natural Sciences.


Chemistry

C. R. Keppel Fund for Undergraduate Research in Chemistry

Support undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds. Students currently or previously enrolled in Chem 4960 may apply.

Dr. and Mrs. Tim D. Leon Scholarship Fund Given in Memory of Nell Ward

Provides a $1,200 scholarship for regularly enrolled Chemistry majors, with preference given to students from these high schools:

  • Riverton H.S., Riverton NE
  • Franklin Co., NE high schools
  • Holdrege H.S., Holdrege NE
  • Phelps Co., NE high schools

Dr. Nell Ward Memorial Scholarship

Provides a $1,300 scholarship to support full-time Chemistry majors, making progress to degree; GPA ≥ 2.80; completed two full Chemistry lecture and labs at UNO; taking courses on UNO campus.

James K. and Kathleen H. Wood Scholarship in Chemistry

Provides a $750 scholarship to junior and senior level chemistry students who complete Org I & II at UNO, with a GPA ≥ 3.0 in those courses.

Walter W. and Mittie W. Linstromberg Scholarship in Chemistry

Provides a $1,800 scholarship to regularly enrolled, full-time (sophomore and above) Chemistry majors with an overall GPA ≥ 3.0, and Chemistry GPA ≥ 3.0.

William and Margaret March Endowed Student Scholarship in Memory of Nell Ward

Provides a $1,200 scholarship to support enrolled sophomore and above Chemistry majors with an overall GPA ≥ 3.0. Preference to candidates with demonstrated financial need and if employed and using own resources to pay for college.

Lillian and William Campen Memorial Scholarship

Provides $1,100 scholarship to support regularly enrolled Chemistry majors with ACT ≥ 26 or equivalent SAT score. Preference to candidates with demonstrated financial need.

Dr. Fred W. Upson Grant-in-Aid

Provides $2,400 payable in 10 equal installments during the academic year. Supports a UNO student majoring in or doing research in the field of chemistry. Student must have been a Nebraska resident for not less than 10 years and display academic achievement, involvement, leadership, statement of career goals, and financial need.

Gilbert M. Hitchcock Memorial Scholarship

Provides $600 to Chemistry major, usually awarded to senior level student.

Harry Jerome Talent Scholarship

Provides $600 to support entering UNO Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry majors. Student should be unconditionally accepted to UNO, enrolled for ≥ 6 credit hours, have exceptional talent in a specific area while above average elsewhere academically, and perform research or extracurricular activity in science. Total merit-based package cannot exceed cost of tuition and fees.

Mathematics

James Earl Scholarship

$5,000 will be divided annually amongst several deserving mathematics majors. Each spring, scholarship recipients for the coming year are selected based on their overall GPA, outstanding performance in mathematics courses and their participation in departmental activities such as the Putnam Exam, Problem of the Week, undergraduate research, Mathematics Awareness Month, MSLC tutoring and Math Lab. Students do not apply for this scholarship, but rather are selected based on merit.

Hitchcock Foundation Scholarship

The Hitchcock Foundation annually contributes a $500 scholarship, each to the Biology, Math, Chemistry and Physics Departments. The Math Department awards this scholarship to a deserving incoming freshman who declares math as their major.

The awardee will continue to receive the scholarship for four years by remaining a math major, maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better, and maintaining full-time status.

NASA MUST Scholarship

Students pursuing a degree in a physical science, technology, engineering and mathematics related fields are eligible to apply. Requirements include: must be a U.S. citizen, underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Must be full-time at a U.S. university with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.

TEACH Grants
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grants provide $4,000 a year/up to $16,000 for undergraduates, or $8,000 for master's students in scholarship aid. Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or score in the top 25% on the college/graduate admissions test. Once a degree or teaching certificate is earned, TEACH grant recipients must spend at least four of the next eight years teaching in a 'high-need' field (math is one) with at least 30% poor students.

Alliance/Merck Ciencia Hispanic Scholars Program
The Alliance/Merck Ciencia (Science) Hispanic Scholars Program is a new partnership to improve Hispanic student access to higher education and degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Hispanic college students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico pursuing a bachelor's degree in a STEM field major are invited to apply for a $2,000 one-time scholarship of which 25 will be awarded.

Mutual of Omaha Actuarial Scholarship for Minority Students
The Mutual of Omaha Actuarial Scholarship for Minority Students is awarded to undergraduates preparing for actuarial careers. The $5,000 award, which is paid in equal installments during the school year ($2,500 per semester), is contingent upon the recipient's continued satisfactory preparation for an actuarial career as noted in the Scholarship Guidelines.

MacMillan Scholarship

Supports any physics major who graduates from the Omaha Public School (OPS) system.


Political Science

Darlene & Orville D. Menard Scholarship

Provides $2,000 and supports undergraduates majoring in political science who will be seniors in the upcoming academic year. It is awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement, without regard to financial need.


Psychology

The Frank Bellinghiere Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. Applicants should describe their financial situation (sources of support) to establish need.

The Stephen R. Paige Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement. Applicants should describe their financial situation (sources of support) to establish need.

The Mary E. Flannigan Memorial Research Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of involvement in research. Applicants should describe research activities such as FUSE grants awarded, assisting in faculty labs, independent study projects, senior thesis, conference presentations, and publications.

The Mary E. Flannigan Memorial Service Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of department, university, and community service. Applicants should describe both UNO and volunteer and community service activities. Leadership positions are especially worthy of note.


Religious Studies

Ron Burke Scholarship

Provides $2,500 per academic year. Supports a junior or senior level student Religious Studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Essay required.

Dale Stover Scholarship

Provides $500 per academic year. Supports regularly enrolled students at UNO, religious studies majors in the College of Arts and Sciences or have declared religious studies as their area of concentration (major) in the Division of Continuing Studies.
