For Students Interested in Becoming Optometrists
There are many options for optometrists—working in sports vision, geriatrics, pediatrics and research. Undergraduate preparation for the study of optometry requires a strong foundation in science, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences.
Pre-optometry students must secure a minimum of 90 credit hours of college credit before applying to a College of Optometry, and a bachelor’s degree is highly recommended. Students are strongly encouraged to choose a major of interest and follow the requirements for that major while completing the necessary pre-optometry courses.
- The OAT (Optometry Admissions Test) is required for application to a College of Optometry.
- No grade below “C” will be accepted.
Pre-requisite courses can be completed in Nebraska, but there are currently no optometry schools in the state. Please consult your school of choice regarding specific requirements.
Some out-of-state schools include:
- University of Houston College of Optometry
- Indiana University School of Optometry
- University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry
- Northeastern State University College of Optometry (Tahlequah, OK)
- Pacific University College of Optometry (Forest Grove, OR)
- Pennsylvania College of Optometry
- Southern College of Optometry (Memphis, TN)
