For Students Interested in Becoming Cytotechnologists
This laboratory profession involves the study of cells and cellular anomalies. Cell specimans are examined microscopically, and cellular changes that indicate disease are noted and submitted to pathologists for final evaluation. Therefore, a well-rounded background in biological sciences, chemistry, and mathematics is strongly advised.
Cytotechnology is a post-baccalaureate certificate at the graduate level at UNMC, and requires bachelor’s degree in addition to the coursework in this program. Preference is given to students with a minimum cumulative GPA and science/math GPA of 2.8. No grade below “C” will be accepted. UNMC accepts six students annually to its program.
It is recommended that additional courses in chemistry, biology, and mathematics, beyond the required minimums be taken, prior to application.
