Teaching Analysis By Students

  4. Teaching Analysis By Students

Teaching Analysis By Students (TABS) provides faculty (including teaching assistants) with an opportunity to assess pedagogical strengths and weaknesses by requesting mid-semester student evaluations. All assessments are confidential and free.

TABS analysis provides the faculty member with both qualitative and quantitative results. TABS reports include valuable information specific to the class currently taught with the opportunity to make changes within that class prior to the end of the semester.

Furthermore, TABS addresses both teaching strengths and specific instructional areas which can be further developed. Faculty members will receive a confidential TABS report with documented data that may be used to enhance classroom teaching, and may be included in your annual review packet or RPT notebook.

Schedule a TABS Consultation

  1. To register for TABS, see the table above and use the appropriate link to request the week in which you'd like TABS to be completed in your class.
  2. Instructions on how to administer TABS in your classroom will be forwarded to you.
  3. During your assigned TABS evaluation period (TABS is administered during weeks 6, 7, and 8 of each semester*), student assessments will be available online. The Center for Faculty Excellence recommends that faculty allow class time to complete the evaluations. The estimated time needed to complete the evaluations is 15 minutes. For meaningful results, you will need at least 12 students to complete the evaluation.
  4. A trained TABS consultant will contact the faculty member to arrange a consultation to review the results. This consultation is private and results will only be shared with the consultant and the faculty member. At the end of each semester, results are purged from the system so that no record remains. Should you desire to keep your results, you will need to print a hard copy or save the results to your computer.

*Due to the J-Session TABS for Spring 2022 will be run during Weeks 5, 6, and 7.

Faculty Comments on the TABS Process

  • Having the opportunity to have a conversation with the consultant adds enormous value to the evaluation process.
  • The consultant's synopsis of the results was very insightful, and she provided several great ideas for ways to improve.
  • Getting student feedback early in the semester, versus at the end, allows me to make changes and improvements for this particular set of students.
