The Community Engagement Committee of UNO's Staff Advisory Council provides inclusive and equitable networking and community volunteer opportunities through service for all UNO staff. It cultivates meaningful connections within campus and the Omaha Community with proactive engagement to make meaningful and reciprocal impacts on our communities.

Our Mission

Our mission is to cultivate meaningful connections, foster inclusivity, and empower staff at the University of Nebraska at Omaha through proactive engagement with internal and external stakeholders. We aim to cultivate empathy, and empower every member of our organization, driving positive change and cohesion within our Staff community at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Objectives

The committee aims to encourage staff members to participate in volunteer activities and community service projects promoted and sponsored by the Staff Advisory Council and the campus, demonstrating the organization's commitment to social responsibility and civic engagement.

Long-term Goals

  1. Enhance Communication: Develop and implement strategies to improve communication channels within the staff community to encourage staff to participate in volunteer activities and community-based projects.
  2. Foster Collaboration: Create opportunities for staff members to collaborate on projects that can be recognized year-over-year; both internally to SAC and campus, and community partners.
  3. Expand Outreach: Increase outreach efforts within campus and the Omaha community to foster a supportive and interconnected community that supports the UNO Pillars and Core.
    1. Solicit ideas from CEC (Community Engagement Center) community partners for projects. (Inclusive Communities)
    2. Solicit ideas from campus-based community departments for projects; like Service Learning, Mav Food Pantry, Library, Child Care Center.

Yearly Expectations

  • Identify SMART Goals for upcoming council year to support long-term goals.
  • Identify tasks and set timelines for accomplishing council year goals.
  • Track community-based projects for participation, communication, and general staff feedback that can be used to guide future planning.
  • Host 6 community-based projects during the council year.
  • Explore opportunities to celebrate and acknowledge campus holiday/heritage months.

Acts of Service Passport
A Service Learning project with Kids Can was held at the Peter Kewit Institute on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.
University of Nebraska at Omaha students, faculty and staff volunteered at various locations in Omaha, Nebraska, on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, as part of the MLK Day of Service. Volunteers started the day at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center before heading out to volunteer.
