Starting college in a new country is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. The UNO Health Center is here to support your health and help you learn about the health care system.
The health care system in the United States might be different to what you are used to in your home country. Here are a few things to know:
Insurance is a way to protect yourself from high medical costs.
In the United States, health care can be expensive. Insurance helps cover some of these costs, so you don’t have to pay for everything yourself.
- All ILUNO, UNO international students and scholars with an "F" or "J" visa are required to purchase the UNO student health insurance plan called UnitedHealthcare StudentResources. You are required to complete the enrollment/waiver process every semester.
Where to go for health care.
- Emergency room (ER): If you're facing a life-threatening issue, like chest pain, difficulty breathing or a major injury, go to the emergency room or call 911. Emergency rooms are the most expensive health care option.
- Urgent care: For non-life-threatening problems that still need quick attention, like a bad sore throat, minor injuries, or a high fever. You do not need an appointment, and it is usually cheaper than the ER.
- Primary care clinic: Your main doctor for routine checkups, ongoing health issues and general care. You will need to make an appointment. It's the best place to start for most non-urgent health concerns. This is generally the least expensive option.
