Senior Q&A

What are the two or three most important things you learned throughout the program?

Some important lessons I learned throughout the program include the value of taking advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, no matter how small. Many students do not take advantage of things like career fairs or participate in extra-curricular activities outside of class. Obviously those students can still be successful, but I have found it to be enriching to be exposed to a variety of experiences and have a bit more control over my post-graduate opportunities. I also learned to leave my comfort zone and it has been worth it every time I have done so. Trying new things has allowed me to make more friends and have more fun! The fun part of college is often overlooked, but the experience is much more enjoyable if you are open to new things.

What is the best advice that someone has given to you as a Scholar?

Every goal is within your reach. I have heard that we are only two phone calls away from a life-changing opportunity and that has proven to be true multiple times. There a few Scholars that were in older cohorts that I still keep in touch with today. I sometimes reach out to them when I have career advice as many work in the same career as myself but may have answers to questions that I cannot answer on my own. You never know who will be the connection you need, so it is good to have many of them!

Who is the person who has influenced you the most?

The person who has influenced me the most is my father, Dustin Bailey. I have become more like my dad as my college years have passed. He lives a very disciplined lifestyle that has allowed him to be successful in business. Things like waking up at the same time every day, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a competitive attitude translate into any career field. Building good habits is the best thing anyone can do for themselves and the benefits are immense. My mental and physical health have dramatically improved since making a few lifestyle changes that I will hold on to forever. I could not have been nearly as successful in college without being disciplined and competitive, just like my dad.
