Dr. Humaira Jami is Fulbright Postdoc Fellow aiming at developing and imparting training to healthcare providers regarding healthcare needs of transgender population in Pakistan in collaboration with Dr. Jay Irwin as her advisor. She is Assistant Professor in National Institute of Psychology (NIP), Centre of Excellence, Quaid-i-Azam University. She has been part of the Institute since 2003; it’s been more than 18 years of affiliation to date. Before that she taught as Honorary Lecturer in F.G. Postgraduate College for Women, F 7/2, Islamabad, Pakistan from 1997-1998. She is Associate Editor of Pakistan Journal of Psychological Research and associated with journal from 2005 till date which is a well-placed journal of social sciences in Pakistan indexed in SCOPUS. Her PhD work has immensely contributed in national policy making on gender issues and bringing the plight of transgender people in Pakistan into limelight. It helped in bridging the gap between social policy making and subject knowledge in Pakistan. As an expert in the field, she was invited by National Administrative and Data Registration Authority (NADRA; Feb 2009) on Pakistan Supreme Court’s decision to work for provision in recognition of ‘third gender’ at the State level. She has been part of committees of Supreme Court and Punjab Social Welfare and Protection Authority to devise Transgender Rights Protection Policy in 2018 where being part of committees she prepared recommendations about socio-psychological and legal aspects related to third gender. She is full member of WPATH and international member of American Psychological Association.
Education
She did Bachelor in Science from Punjab University, Pakistan in 1995. She completed her M.Sc. (1997) from Punjab University, Pakistan and earned Roll of Honor. In 2005, she won Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan's 'Indigenous PhD 5000 Fellowship (Phase II)”.
Teaching
She teaches and supervise research at PhD, MPhil, M.Sc., and BS level. Major areas include psychological assessment and testing, children and adolescents’ developmental issues, developmental psychopathology, psychology of gender, sociology, psychology of deviant behavior, introduction to applied areas in psychology.
Research
Her PhD in Psychology majorly define her expertise in Social Psychology and Psychology of Gender. However, her research supervision cover areas related to psychological assessment and testing, developmental issues of children and adolescents, psychopathology and mental health, gender and sexuality, issues and challenges faced by transgender people, and impact of technology on mental health. She supervises research at PhD, MPhil, M.Sc., and BS level and has supervised around 59 undergraduate and 23 postgraduate level research. Currently, 5 students are under her supervision in PhD program. She also supervises internship of students in developmental psychopathology in which they take clinical cases of children and adolescents suffering from any psychopathology from hospital setting. She guides them in diagnosing, carrying out assessment of the problem, and suggesting treatment to the cases.
She has completed funded projects in various capacities. Most recently, as Principal Investigator, she has completed a Research Project (24 months) in August 2021 funded by National Research Programme for Universities, HEC, Pakistan on “Preventing Cyberbullying and Cybervictimization Among Adolescents: Cyberlaw Awareness, Internet Self-efficacy, and Online Lifestyle in Perspective’. She completed another Research Project as Co-PI in 2019 (24 Months) on “Role of Exposure to Domestic Violence on Personality and Mental Health of Pakistani Youth” funded National Research Programme for Universities, HEC, Pakistan. She has won another as Co PI on “Development and Effectiveness of A Web-Based Psychoeducational Program for Reducing Radicalization in University Students” for year 2022.
She was the focal person in signing MOU in 2016-2021 with Oxfam and NIP to work for sexual and reproductive health in Pakistan and for youth development for 5 years. Being focal person, she completed a research project on Sexual and Reproductive Health of Youth (Duration 8 months from May to Dec 2016) as Co-investigator; generated funding in organizing 6th International Conference on Psychology of Gender: Issues and Challenges in Perspective (1-2 Dec 2016) organized by the Institute; and established a computer lab for M.Phil and PhD students with hi-tech computers. She was part of it from planning to execution.
