Explore how what our previous Explorer's have done inside and outside of the classroom.

Discover & Serve

The "Discover & Serve" initiative provides opportunities for every Explorer to (1) have a positive impact in the Omaha community, (2) lay the groundwork to explore their career pathways and (3) learn how their choices at UNO can influence their journey to become being holistic, global citizens.

We have previously partnered with the AIM Institute, Together Inc., the Intercultural Senior Center, and the Food Bank of the Heartland. Explorers will be assigned Canvas-accessible reflective assignments and participate in informative discussions with nonprofit partners.

The Benefits of Volunteering on Academics

The act of volunteering benefits beyond helping others; it can also help enhance your academic and social life. Here are some key points on how volunteering can positively impact you:

Increased Classroom Attention and Higher GPAs

Students who engage in volunteer activities often develop better time management and organizational skills, which translate into improved focus and higher GPAs. Studies have shown that students who volunteer are more engaged in their studies and achieve better academic outcomes (SpringerLink) (AmeriCorps).

Enhanced Socialization

By working with diverse groups, students can improve their interpersonal skills and develop meaningful relationships. This increased socialization can lead to a stronger sense of belonging and support, which is crucial for overall well-being and success in school (Chico State) (Evidence Based Mentoring).

Personal and Professional Development

Volunteering helps students gain leadership skills, improve communication, and enhance problem-solving abilities. These experiences are not only beneficial for personal development but also make students more attractive to future employers (Chico State) (SpringerLink).

Improved Mental and Physical Health

Engaging in volunteer work has been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced stress, lower rates of depression, and improved overall mental health. Additionally, volunteering promotes physical activity and a sense of purpose, contributing to better physical health and longevity (AmeriCorps) (Evidence Based Mentoring).

Explorer-led Programming

We are always listening to the passions and skills of our Explorers. By offering space, pedagogical consultations, and marketing support, we want to champion their lessons, experiences and stories.

Supporting Explorers to Become Creators and Leaders

At EXPL, we are dedicated to setting up our Explorers for success by fostering their development as creators, leaders, and engaged global citizens.

Empowering Leadership and Creativity

By providing resources and support, we empower our Explorers to take initiative and lead their own projects. This experience nurtures leadership qualities and encourages creative problem-solving. Students learn to manage projects, collaborate with peers, and communicate effectively, which are essential skills for future leaders and innovators.

Studies show that student-led learning environments significantly enhance leadership skills and prepare students for future challenges (The Sage) (University of Colorado Boulder).

Enhancing Academic and Professional Growth

Our programming helps students translate their passions into actionable projects, aligning with their academic and career goals. Engaging in such activities promotes higher levels of classroom attention and better academic performance.

Research indicates that students involved in leadership programs exhibit higher graduation rates and better preparedness for college and careers (The Sage) (PlanItTeachers).

Building Stronger Social Networks

Through our community partnerships and collaborative projects, Explorers build valuable social networks. These connections provide support and open doors to new opportunities, fostering a sense of belonging and enhancing social skills (PlanItTeachers) (University of Colorado Boulder).

Promoting Holistic Well-being

Studies show that engaging in leadership and creative activities reduce stress levels, increase life satisfaction, and provides self-purpose through meaningful projects. These benefits contribute to their overall well-being and prepare them for future challenges (PlanItTeachers) (University of Colorado Boulder).

Real-world Impact and Community Engagement

By leading projects that address real community needs, Explorers gain firsthand experience in making a tangible difference. This practical experience is invaluable for personal and professional growth, helping students develop a strong sense of civic responsibility and global citizenship (The Sage) (PlanItTeachers).
