Integrative & Individualized Studies

Solving the challenges of our increasingly complex world requires interdisciplinary thinking, methods, and solutions.

Choosing to major in Interdisciplinary Studies offers you an opportunity to customize your bachelor’s degree by designing your own program of study. You will select complementary courses or minors from academic disciplines that allow you to focus on the subjects and topics that interest you.

Core coursework in the major explores diverse subjects that share a strong interdisciplinary theme. By emphasizing the importance of studying complex issues from multiple perspectives, these courses equip students with skills in critical thinking, interpretation, problem-solving, and multi-faceted analysis.

You may choose to pursue either a Bachelor of Science with a cognate requirement or a Bachelor of Arts with a foreign language requirement in either the Integrative or Individualized Studies concentrations.

Read our FAQ page for more information or talk with an advisor.

Double Majoring

Double majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with the Integrative or Individualized concentration offers students an opportunity to explore a second field of interest, to acquire credits required by a graduate program, or to add an area of expertise to their profile, without fulfilling all the requirements of a second major. Those interested in double majoring should pursue another UNO program that does not overlap substantially with their concentration coursework.
