Integrity
- Refrain from inputting personal or confidential information into AI tools.
- Ensure all AI tools are used in accordance with risk classification and security and FERPA Ensure all data is deidentified when using in an AI tool.
- Provide human oversight for AI-generated content to verify accuracy and minimize bias.
- Protect intellectual property rights; avoid intentionally inputting journal articles or other copyrighted materials in non-enterprise tools.
- Verify AI output before accepting it as fact.
- Consistently edit, revise, and actively work to generate content that encourages fair representation.
- AI models are trained on datasets of historical information, images, and textual references that may unintentionally perpetuate existing biases and inequalities. To counteract this, users should critically examine AI-generated output for skewed content and sources.
- AI tools come with inherent limitations and potential biases that users must be aware of and actively address. This is particularly important when using AI for image generated and text creation.
- Regularly evaluate AI use to prevent an overreliance on the tool.
Transparency
- Clearly disclose when content is AI-generated, including what tool was used and how AI was used.
- Provide disclaimers up-front when AI will assist in decision-making.
- Provide disclaimers for AI chat assistants, informing users of the potential for incorrect information and encouraging double-checking outputs.
Access
- Use AI tools to create inclusive and accessible materials, such as multilingual content or screen-reader friendly documents.
- Advocate for equitable access to AI tools across the university, including free or university provided software for those without personal resources.
- Encourage faculty, staff, and students to participate in AI Pilots on campus to explore AI use.
AI Literacy
- All users of free, paid (non-enterprise), or enterprise AI tools (university sanctioned) should complete the Generative AI Cybersecurity Awareness Bridge Training to understand how to use AI tools according to university policy.
- Attend campus training sessions to understand how to critically assess AI-generated output.
- Familiarize yourself with the ethical implications of using AI in your role and apply best practices.
- Recognize the rapid evolution of the AI tools and embrace a mindset of continuous learning.
- Recognize the use of AI as a tool, not a solution or replacement for work and/or learning.
- Prioritize discussions about the benefits and limitations of AI in addition to the ethics of using AI at the university.
