Researcher Guiding Principles

  1. UNO
  2. AI at UNO

Learn to navigate AI responsibly in academia with guidelines on integrity, transparency, access, and literacy to foster ethical and inclusive practices.

Integrity

  • Refrain from using AI in all aspects of research but instead as a research tool.
  • Prioritize using vetted UNO enterprise tools for research.
  • AI-generated summaries, insights, or graphs should be critically reviewed and validated. Human researchers are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of findings.
  • AI use in research should always aligns with ethical research practices, academic honesty, and the guidelines set forth by publishing and funding agencies
  • Never use AI when peer reviewing research.
  • All data should be deidentified before being used in AI tools.
  • Critically review AI-generated content for potential bias in results.
  • Manually edit, supplement, or revise AI-generated content to ensure fair representation.
  • AI should not replace human interaction or consent in the research process.

Transparency

  • Clearly disclose AI use in your research process (data collection, analysis, interpretation, etc.) and how human oversight was applied.
  • Be transparent about AI use with co-authors, other investigators, student researchers, and the end consumer.
  • Explicitly state AI’s contribution in research papers, grant proposals, and presentations.
  • Disclose any planned AI use in consent forms for research participants.
  • Document AI workflows, prompts, and outputs related to AI implementation in the research process.

Access

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address equity issues in AI applications
  • When developing AI models, prioritize diverse, representative, and ethically sourced data.
  • Train your team on using AI tools responsible, including recognizing bias and validating outputs.
  • If working with student researchers, provide hands-on experience on how AI can help in research practices.
  • Participate in AI Pilots on campus to explore AI use.

AI Literacy

  • Participate in advanced workshops and trainings on AI applications for research
  • Develop critical evaluation skills and ensure that co-investigators practice similar skills.
  • Stay informed about evolving best practices for ethical AI use in research.
  • Ensure that all colleagues and mentees recognize appropriate use of AI in research
  • Prioritize continuous learning, attend workshops, webinars, etc. on ethical AI use in research.
  • Prioritize discussions about the benefits and limitations of AI in addition to the ethics of using AI in research roles at the university.
