Run, Hide, Fight

The following guidelines are intended to reduce your personal risk in the unlikely event that an Active Shooter incident should occur on campus.

How to Respond

  • RUN if you can see a safe way out
  • HIDE if there's no clear way out
  • FIGHT if your only option is to defend yourself

Run

  • Have an escape route and plan in mind
  • Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow
  • Leave your belongings behind (take your cell phone)
  • Help others escape, if possible

Hide

  • Lock the door
  • Blockade the door with heavy furniture
  • Silence your cellphone
  • Turn off any source of noise (e.g., radios, TV)
  • Spread out and hide behind large items (e.g., cabinets, desks)
  • Develop a plan of action should the active killer enter
  • Remain quiet

Fight

As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:

 

  • Acting as aggressively as possible against him/her
  • Throwing items and improvising weapons
  • Yelling
  • Committing to your actions

How to Report Emergencies

When to Call

Call 911 or Public Safety at 402.554.2911for emergencies requiring police, fire, or medical aid.

Blue Light Emergency Phones

Blue light emergency phones are located throughout campus and may be activated by simply pushing a button.

This will connect you with a Public Safety dispatcher who will provide assistance.
