Senior Q&A

What are your ultimate career goals?

I would like to end up in an ownership role at an accounting firm in Northeast Nebraska, whether that comes as a partner in an already established firm or as an owner of my own firm. I want to be able to make decisions and help a business grow. I feel that tax accounting and planning along with consulting gives me the opportunity to help the most amount of people using the skills that I have. There are a lot of rungs that go on that ladder: graduating undergrad, graduating grad school, passing the CPA exams are on my immediate radar.

What will you miss most about the Scholars Academy?

I will miss the people of the Scholars Academy the most. I came from a high school class of 17 people, so having a cohort of 20 people helped me become more comfortable moving from a small town to Omaha. For me personally, I also found it valuable to be surrounded by so many people who are doing well. I'm someone who likes having a high bar set and seeing what my other Scholars are doing in the classroom as well as professionally has definitely set a high bar. I most look forward to seeing where the 2018 cohort ends up, as I feel a lot of them have extremely bright futures.

What advice do you have for current Scholars?

Go out and get internships, make it a priority of your college experience. Find out what you like and what you do not like in terms of jobs and companies. I have learned a lot about what types of work I like doing and what types of work I do not like doing from the internships I have had. I have a better idea of what type of company I want to work for as well in terms of size and structure (public versus private accounting in my case). Also, if you come out of college with several years of applicable job experience, you will be leaps and bounds ahead of applicants who have no relevant job experience in their desired field.
