Community Engagement

  3. Community Engagement

Get involved with the Schwalb Center and the community through many activities and events each year.

The Ruth and Phil Sokolof Lecture

The annual Ruth and Phil Sokolof Lecture in Israel and Jewish Studies is the fruit of a generous donation by the Sokolof-Javitch family. Speakers in this series have included former Ambassadors Martin Indyk and Stuart Eizenstat, renowned authors Dan Senor, Daniel Gordis, and Ari Shavit.

Middle East Forums

The Middle East Forum is an initiative of the Middle East Project Fund, the UNO Schwalb Center for Israel & Jewish Studies and the UNO Islamic Studies Program. The Forum is held three times per semester where a panel of experts discusses current events in the Middle East. We encourage students, faculty and community members to bring their questions about the Middle East for an open and fascinating dialogue.

Moshe Gershovich Memorial Symposium

This event, last held in 2018, honors the memory of the late Dr. Moshe Gershovich (1959 - 2017), who was a specialist on North Africa and the Middle East, with a symposium and publication workshop.

Jewish Ethics Symposium

In April 2014, the UNO Schwalb Center held an symposium on Jewish religious and philosophical ethics attended by scholars from across the United States and Israel.

In addition to organizing two days of papers, Dr. Curtis Hutt (Religious Studies) and Dr. Halla Kim (Philosophy) subsequently partnered with Dr. Berel Dov Lerner of Western Galilee College in Israel in putting together a volume that has received an offer for publication by Routledge.

Community Member Trips Abroad

The Schwalb Center previously took a group of community members and students on an educational trip to Israel. This unique trip produced an environment that enhanced an already wonderful trip to Israel. Students and community members engaged each other, the culture, history, and complexity. The Schwalb Center's goal is to create a travel experience that connects UNO Students and the Omaha Community with knowledge of Israel and Judaism.
