Guiding Principles

  1. UNO
  2. AI at UNO

Our Four Guiding Principles

The University of Nebraska at Omaha is dedicated to exploring the use of AI-powered technology, such as generative AI in operational efficiency, teaching and learning, and research and creative activity. We encourage all faculty, staff, and students to experiment with AI-powered technology and build AI skills that can enhance their work and learning experiences.

At the University of Nebraska at Omaha, we highly encourage all faculty, staff and students to use AI-powered technology with the following core principles in mind:

Integrity

Use of intelligent technology at the university should be done with the highest integrity. AI-powered technology should always be used ethically and responsibly, with a focus on safeguarding data, minimizing harm, and ensuring human oversight for decisions and outcomes that are decided with the help of AI-powered technology. AI-powered technology should not be used in ways that promote systemic inequalities.

Integrity Guidelines

Transparency

Users of AI-powered technology at the university should be transparent about when and how AI is being used, why it is being used, and the potential impact it could have, both positive and negative. Processes for implementing AI-powered technology should be documented and accessible to the UNO community and stakeholders to build trust and accountability in AI use.

Transparency Guidelines

Access

AI-powered technology should be used in ways that help build future-ready skills in all faculty, staff, and students. UNO is committed to leveling the playing field and ensuring that all faculty, staff, and students regardless of background, have opportunities to learn about and use AI. UNO encourages all users to effectively engage with and critically assess this technology.

Access Guidelines

AI Literacy

UNO is committed to building AI literacy in faculty, staff, and students. We are dedicated to providing training and incorporating AI technology in ways that teach users about AI’s capabilities and limitations, as well as the ethical considerations to keep in mind when using AI-powered technology.

AI Literacy Guidelines

We have further refined the guidelines for the different user groups within the UNO community.
