Environmental Studies Program at UNOmaha 

The field of Environmental Studies recognizes that finding solutions to the environmental challenges facing our society requires individuals who understand not only the scientific basis for creative solutions, but also the social and economic implications of the alternatives.

The broad base of interest in these topics here at UNO is demonstrated by the range of faculty and students interested in the environment. Environmental Studies Faculty are drawn from across the Omaha campus and share interests in teaching, service, and research related to the environment.

Student interest and participation in environmental studies students with formal course work in Environmental Studies, as well as students active in the Environmental Club (ECUNO) and as members of the Allwine Prairie Volunteers.

Majoring in Environmental Studies at UNO

The Environmental Studies Program at UNOmaha offers undergraduate degrees that provide students with training in the scientific disciplines that make up the environmental sciences. The core requirements also ensure that students have the background in economics, public policy and law, sociology, and ethics necessary to be find technically correct solutions that meet societies many, often conflicting needs.

Majors in Environmental Studies receive a Bachelor's of Science degree. A minor in Environmental Studies is also available. Information on degree programs can be found here.

Environmental Studies Beyond the Classroom

Learning about the environment at UNO extends beyond the classroom. Students, faculty and staff participate in a broad array of service, research, and teaching activities.

The Environmental Studies Program sponsors the Public Forum on the Environment series. These public seminars are intended to give members of the UNO and greater Omaha community an opportunity to hear from a wide range of speakers on current environmental topics. The Environmental Studies Program encourages all our students to spend time exploring the diverse career paths available in environmental fields. The Life Sciences Concentration job page is a good starting point when looking for experience.

UNO's prairie preserves, Allwine Prairie and Davis Prairie, are a unique resource for students to participate in hands-on learning. In addition, students provide help in the management of the preserves.

Members of the Environmental Studies Program have joined with the broader Campus Sustainability Coalition to work towards a "greener" UNO and to help the university fulfil its mission in being a community leader in efficient use of resources.
