How to ensure that once-violent extremists are no longer a threat when they exit the U.S. prison system and reenter society?
Building on Examination of Risk Assessment for Incarcerated Extremists
Objective/Purpose
The purpose of this project is to support the DHS professionals charged with monitoring the recidivism risks of current and formerly incarcerated extremists. The research team aims to develop technological solutions and tools that support these professionals in making probation determinations, conducting risk assessments, and general supervision of extremists upon release.
Methodology
This project will use a design science / ethnographic approach to conduct technology needs assessments and requirements gathering efforts with key stakeholders (e.g., USAOC IT developers, supervisor officer subject matter experts). These efforts will include interviews, focus groups, and surveys to identify IT systems needs and assess adoption criteria. Additionally, prototype systems will be developed, evaluated, and iterated using agile software development methodology.
