Upon acceptance to the University of Nebraska Omaha, here are some important next steps.

Planning on using VA Education Benefits at UNO?

You will need to both apply with the VA and notify UNO of your intent to use military education benefits with us.

Veterans Affairs Benefits are processed by the Military Benefits staff in the Office of Financial Support and Scholarships, they are a resource for VA specific questions.

As you navigate the process, please know that your Military-Connected Resource Center is here to help as well.

Access to VA Benefits

If you plan to use a VA Education Benefit at UNO, be sure to contact the VA and initiate your application. You can Apply For and Manage Your VA Benefits online at https://www.va.gov/education/.

Explore VA Benefits available

You will need to notify the VA and complete a new form if one of the below is true. You are a:

  • First Time Benefit User
  • Transfer Student

From the www.va.gov/education website, scroll down and select "How to apply for education benefits" then click on the button that says "Apply for Education Benefits." It will ask you a series of questions and then a green button will appear that says "Apply now."

Successful completion of the steps above, will result in a Certificate of Eligibility (either automatically or mailed to your residence), from the VA which confirms or denies eligibility.

Military Benefits Agreement - UNO Notice

The Military Benefits Agreement notifies UNO of your military-connected status as well as which benefit you are eligible for and plan to use to while attending UNO. You always have the option of opting in or out of benefits for each semester.

Complete the VA Agreement

Notification of Intent (NOI)

The Notification of Intent is how you will let UNO's Financial Support and Scholarship office know each semester whether or not you would like to use your military education benefits for that semester. This includes your initial semester with UNO.

A link should autopopulate on your MavLINK page under My Important Messages before each semester requesting you to let the university know your preference for that semester.

Don't see the link or can't remember if you did it?
Click here as a secondary way to submit your NOI for the semester.

Submit your Transcripts

UNO needs final, official copies of all courses completed at a previous college or university. Make sure to submit all prior transcripts to the registrar's office. For active duty or veteran students, make sure to also submit your military transcripts.

Joint Service Transcript Request
Community College of the Air Force Transript Request
Defense Language Institution Transcript Request

Complete the FAFSA

Military-connected students may use federal financial aid and institutional aid with their military education benefits.

Before each year of college, apply for federal grants, work-study, and loans with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. Remember to add UNO's School Code to your FAFSA: 002554

Complete the FAFSA

Apply for Scholarships

UNO, the MCRC, and many other colleges and departments of the University have scholarships they award. To compete for these opportunities, fill out the General Scholarship Application via your MavLINK page.

Residency

Did you know you may be charged out-of-state tuition if you did not graduate from a Nebraska high school? However, we have experts ready to help you determine if you qualify for in-state tuition and get your documentation submitted easily.

Read more information about residency for tuition purposes, and how you can apply to receive the in-state tuition rates.
