Maverick Student Employment at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) represents all on-campus positions and is a great option for students interested in flexible scheduling, building campus connections, learning new professional skills, and more that will help with your career readiness.

Student employees make up a large percentage of our workforce in the UNO community. Our students are engaged in the critical work that helps keep our colleges, divisions, and departments operating.

It is in acknowledgment of this, that Maverick Student Employment provides an enriching experience for both students and supervisors to keep our university strong and focused on student success.


Mission

Maverick Student Employment (MSE) is focused on elevating the on-campus student employment experience. For students, MSE provides personal and professional development opportunities that support campus engagement, well-being, and future goals. For supervisors, MSE provides tools and resources that develop skills for coaching and assisting students as they navigate their employment experience.

Vision

To establish Maverick Student Employment as a high-impact co-curricular experience that helps with student retention and career readiness.

    • On-campus employers will ask for your class schedule. Together, you will develop a schedule that will help you balance your coursework and employment.

    • Serving as a launching pad to your future career goals, student employment is a co-curricular exercise that will aid in your personal development and connection to what you are learning in the classroom.

Student and Supervisor Learning Outcomes

Student

With the support of Maverick Student Employment, students will be able to:

Search for Jobs

1.1 - Understand and access the Handshake platform and search for student positions

1.2 - Understand the different position types including student worker, work study, Graduate Assistant, and graduate student worker

Apply for Jobs

2.1 - Prepare application materials, including résumé, work availability, and other required documents

2.2 - Develop and practice proper interviewing techniques

2.3 – Understand the proper identification documents needed to complete the hiring process and work on-campus

Reflect on Experience

3.1 - Connect what they are learning in the classroom to their student employment experience

3.2 - Articulate and reflect on their personal and professional goals and how their student employment experience is helping them to develop soft skills that will aid in their future employment

Supervisor

With the support of Maverick Student Employment, supervisors of student employees will be able to:

Navigate Administrative Steps

1.1 – Understand how to access PeopleAdmin and post a requisition for a student position

1.2 – Write a job description for their student position that includes all the proper elements

1.3 – Fill out a Personnel Action Form (PAF) for various reasons including, but not limited to hiring and separation, and understand the workflow of where to send completed forms

1.4 – Understand student employment policies and ensure compliance

1.5 – Understand the process of closing the student position in Handshake and PeopleAdmin after hiring is complete

Hire Students

2.1 – Understand the Handshake platform and how students access position postings

2.2 – Interview candidates following proper procedures and best practices

Supervise Students

3.1 – Welcome, onboard, and train student employees

3.2 – Write position expectations that students should follow in the workplace

3.3 – Understand student employment as a co-curricular high impact practice that helps to develop soft skills that will benefit students in future employment

3.4 – Have conversations with students on how their employment experience connects to what they are learning in the classroom and their future goals

Maverick Student Employment Advisory Committee (MSEAC)

The MSESC brings together members of the UNO community who work with the student employment experience or supervise student employees.

This committee is focused on continuous improvement of the student employment experience for students, supervisors, and others who may intersect with student employees.
