Movement Variability

Data Collection of Slip Study Using a Harness in the Gait Lab

Movement Variability research investigates the natural variations that are observed across multiple repetitions of a task. Investigating this natural variability allows our biomechanists to understand how the body self-organizes to find the most optimal movement patterns for a given situation. This knowledge aims to identify how we adapt to different environmental conditions, how risk of injury can be reduced, how performance can be improved, and many others. Movement Variability research within our department is also applied to develop interventions to address important public health problems such as falls due to aging and a wide range of diseases (i.e. Parkinson’s disease, Peripheral Artery Disease).
