  4. How to Properly Format a Table

Properly formatted tables have a header row and each cell has text. Tables will appear with a black header and alternating gray and white rows.

Unformatted vs. Formatted Table

Unformatted tables do not have grid lines, colored rows, empty cell(s), or a header row.

To fix a table, you may need to add a header row with text, or add text in a previously empty cell.

Do not use an unformatted table to display images on a webpage. Remove the images from the table and delete the table.

How to Fix an Unformatted Table

Go to the table

Place your cursor in a cell that is not the top row

Go to Formats >> Custom >> Select "Table"

If you do not have a header row: add a row at the top of the table and add content to each cell. If it does not make sense to have content in each cell, merge the cells and ensure the text in the header row makes sense. This is not the preferred solution, but will add more context for adaptive technology.

Place your cursor in the header row (top row)

Right click >> Row Properties >> Change "Row type" to Header

If this does not fix the table, go to Format on the toolbar >> Clear formatting and try again.
