This checklist was created to help the Maverick Community update digital content across UNO's digital platforms in order to meet the ADA Title II guidelines by April 2026.
While it is based on the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, it is not a substitute for the WCAG specification.
There may be different ways to update each of these items in the system you are using (i.e. Canvas vs. Cascacade CMS) but the elements below apply to all digital content.
Cascade pages, Canvas pages, and documents
- Headings: headings should be listed on your page in the correct order largest <h2> to smallest <h6>
- Images: all images should have good, descriptive alt text - don't copy and paste from content already on the page
- Tables: tables should only be used to present rows and columns of data (not for making a two column layout or for placing images) and header rows should be present with content in all cells
- Links and buttons: link text is short, descriptive, understandable, and unique - each link on a page should have different text
- Time limits: pages with have time limits should have a way to adjust those limits for users who need more time
- Language: the language of the document should be defined
- Color contrast: documents should have sufficient contrast between text and background colors; avoid using color as the only means to communicate information
Cascade pages only
- Popups: all pop-ups like menus and chats are announced and can be dismissed
- Flashing and flickering: avoid using content that flashes or flickers at a rate of 3 or more times per second as this might trigger seizures
- Auto-updating content: features that move, flash, blink or update automatically (i.e., carousels, animated background graphics) can be paused
- Custom code validation: web pages with custom code should be using valid HTML and should neet all accessibility requirements (e.g. proper link text, color contrast)
Audio and Video
- Captions: recorded videos must have captions
- Audio description: unless the information in the video track is already provided in the audio track, no audio description is necessary
- Transcripts: recorded audio must have a transcript
- Live captions: captions must be available for live meetings, classes, and events
- iframe title: videos must have a title in the embed code
