  4. What is Maverick Flex Path?

Maverick Flex Path is the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s innovative approach to competency-based education (CBE).

Designed especially for working professionals and adult learners, Maverick Flex Path offers flexible, career-aligned programs where you progress by showing what you know.

Instead of seat time in the classroom or credit hours, you advance by demonstrating mastery of competencies. Want to learn how Maverick Flex Path can help you take control of your education?

1. Earn a Degree or Certificate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha Online

Once you complete your program, you will earn an accredited degree or certificate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha—just like students who attend classes on campus.

These programs are developed and taught by UNO faculty and maintain the same academic rigor as traditional programs.

2. Build on Your Experience and Knowledge

Maverick Flex Path programs use a different learning model called competency-based education (CBE). CBE is a nationally recognized approach that allows you to earn academic credentials by demonstrating mastery of clearly defined skills and knowledge—called competencies—at your own pace.

In traditional programs, students typically follow a 15-week semester schedule. In CBE programs, you have greater control over how quickly you progress by demonstrating your ability to master each topic and build on your existing knowledge. That’s where prior experience comes in.

If you already have knowledge in a subject area, you can demonstrate mastery through assessments and move quickly.

3. Learn at Your Own Pace

Maverick Flex Path is designed to fit around your life and work schedule. Move forward by demonstrating what you know, not by spending a set number of hours in class. This approach allows you to progress at a pace that works for you and keep up with your responsibilities at work and at home.

4. Supported Experience

While Maverick Flex Path allows you to move at your own pace, you are never on your own. When you begin the program, you will be paired with a Student Success Coach who serves as your go-to person throughout your journey.

Your Maverick Flex Path Student Success Coach is your advisor, mentor, and partner in success. From admission through program completion, they provide personalized guidance to help you plan your path, stay on track, and navigate your program with confidence. Whether you need help setting goals, managing your time, or connecting to resources, your coach is there to support you every step of the way.

You will engage with faculty throughout your program. They are available to answer academic questions, provide feedback on your work, and support your progress through course content.
