CBE is a nationally recognized learning model that allows you to earn academic credentials by mastering clearly defined skills and knowledge, called competencies, at your own pace, with support along the way.

Key features of CBE include:

Learning outcomes aligned with workforce needs
Progress based on demonstrated mastery, not time in class
Flexibility within structured academic terms
Frequent, meaningful interaction with instructors

CBE is not the same as credit for prior learning or self-paced correspondence education; it's a guided, faculty-supported path with high expectations and personalized support.

Maverick Flex Path programs include graduate certificates and degree options designed in the CBE model.

All programs:

Follow UNO's standard academic calendar
Offer five start dates per year
Allow flexible pacing within each 8-week term
Are built around competencies and real-world assessments

The first Maverick Flex Path program, the Graduate Certificate in Executive Business, will commence courses in the Fall 2026.

Courses are bundled into 1–3 competencies that:

Follow a consistent design to make navigation easy
Allow you to focus your time on new learning, while moving efficiently through content you've already mastered
Require you to complete assessments to demonstrate your learning
Include personalized faculty feedback and multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery

Every Maverick Flex Path learner has access to a dedicated team:

Recruitment Specialists: Support you early in the process by answering questions, helping you understand program fit, guiding you through application and enrollment steps, and staying connected as you get started.
Success Coaches: Partner with you throughout the program to support pacing, planning, motivation, and navigating challenges, so you stay on track and confident in your progress.
Faculty: Teach, guide, and assess your work, providing timely, personalized feedback to help you demonstrate mastery and progress through your program.
