Empowering Educators, Motivating Readers, Transforming Futures

The NE Early Literacy Workshop was developed as a professional learning model for educators to learn, study, and discuss the core concepts of evidence-based reading instruction.

Workshop participants' experience includes:

  • Five in-person sessions during which they participate in hands-on, minds-on learning experiences that bridge theory to practice.
  • Asynchronous module tasks that focus on transitioning their learning back to their own classroom and students.
  • Engaging with a professional text focused on evidence-based instructional practices by reading the text, discussing it with peers, and documenting their reflections.
  • Deepening their understanding of early literacy development while fostering a lifelong love of reading in their students.

District Customization & Impact

The NE Early Literacy team takes pride in customizing training to align with the district's ELA goals, curriculum, and professional development needs while meeting Nebraska's mandates for Tenet 1 of the Nebraska Literacy Project - Professional Learning System. Some of the ways we incorporate these components include the following elements:

Before Implementation

UNO Team & District Initial Meeting: The UNO Team and a district representative meet to review workshop expectations, requirements, and other program logistics.

Onboarding Checklist: The district representative completes the onboarding checklist, allowing participant enrollment to begin.

During Implementation

Leader's Guides: The Leader’s Guide is sent to building leaders (principals, instructional facilitators, etc.) to help connect the workshop to the classroom.

Module Managers: The Module Manager provides leaders with guidance on incorporating module activities into Grade Level Meetings or Professional Learning Communities.

Leader's Modules: The Leader’s Modules were designed for building administrators and curriculum leaders overseeing early literacy educators and are designed to be efficient and consumable extensions of the early literacy workshop.

After Implementation

Data Reports: Data summary sheets are provided to highlight the impact the workshop had on teacher self-reported efficacy.

This map shows the locations that the workshop has been implemented across Nebraska, including Alliance, Blair, Crete, CUES, Gretna, Lincoln, MOEC, Omaha, Ralston, Scottsbluff, and Seward.
