First Forward Student Organization

  1. UNO
  2. First-Gen Mavs
  3. Support for Students

Welcome to UNO and to the First Forward Student Organization!

Hello First Gen Mavs!

We are excited to share that a new student organization has been created to support first-generation college students at UNO. First Forward’s purpose is to support first-generation college students through peer engagement in an effort to create an environment in which needed resources and guidance are readily available.

We seek to provide opportunities for all members to develop as scholars and leaders, and to form a strong relationship between campus and community involvement. We want to empower members to proudly embrace the label “first generation college students” through organization sponsored events.

We are currently looking for committee members and always accepting new general members for First Forward! Please make sure to be signed in to your UNO email in order to gain access to the forms.

Founders of First Forward

Vanessa and Paola are two first-generation college students who saw a need for increased support of First Gen students, and took matters into their own hands. While they knew the support existed among faculty, staff, and administration, they did not see students involved in the movement to better support each other.

This encouraged them to create First Forward. They know what it is like to be a First Gen student, but also recognize how lucky they are to have a learning community that assists them in their journey through college. Acknowledging that not everyone has that, and that the diversity among First Gen students extends beyond racial, socioeconomic, and other backgrounds, they knew they wanted to create a space for first-generation college students to feel understood and supported.

So whether it be as a general member who attends the organized events, or a committee member working to organize the events, Paola and Vanessa welcome you to join the movement.
