Degree:

Bachelor of Science in Education
Major: Communication Disorders

Communication Disorders is a pre-professional undergraduate program that prepares candidates for advanced study in speech-language pathology or audiology programs.

The undergraduate Communication Disorders (CDIS) program at UNO provides the foundational skills for candidates who will pursue a graduate degree and professional licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist or Audiologist. UNO students are prepared with the skills and disposition to be successful in graduate school and as future practitioners in settings such as schools, clinics, hospitals, and human services agencies.

What sets UNO apart from other institutions?

Service Learning + hands-on learning opportunities
Our engaged, expert faculty provide opportunities for Service Learning courses and research activities, allowing students the experience of working in a variety of educational and healthcare settings with many different populations. Students gain the experience of working with children, adolescents, and adults from diverse background and with a range of communication challenges, applying the assessment and intervention skills they are learning in courses.

Unique clinical experiences
Clinical experience is an integral part of the curriculum and training of future practitioners, and UNO offers the potential for undergraduate clinical experiences at our innovative, on-site Speech-Language Clinic. Undergraduates are offered their first opportunity to observe clinical sessions, and apply theoretical knowledge in a hands-on clinical experience under the direct supervision of licensed and certified speech-language pathologists and UNO graduate student practitioners.

Fatima Arroyo, 1st Year SLP Graduate Student

"The undergraduate class that got me interested in this field was Intro to Communication Disorders. It gave me an insight into the populations that we serve and why access to speech services is a human right. It also introduced me to the great need that our field has for bilingual practitioners which is something that resonated with me. "
