Additional Information
Why are you running for Student Government?
I have been involved with Student Government since my freshman year. From then until now, I have created so many valuable memories and connections that I think will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I have always been someone who considers myself a leader, but being involved with the Freshman Leadership Council, joining the Executive board my sophomore year as the External Relations Liaison, and then elevating to the vice president role, has brought about a brand new meaning for what true leadership is.
Each year I have been able to learn a little more about what it means to be a leader and an advocate, and I have grown very passionate about the work that I am doing. Not only do I get to represent the student body, but I get the opportunity to hone my leadership skills, and learn how to better serve my community.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
A significant challenge on our campus is the lack of cohesion among students. UNO has come a long way since the founding of the University of Omaha in 1908, but I think we have only just begun.
I think it is important for us to develop a growth mindset and start engaging students in the process of improving the culture of our campus, and making the experience better for years to come. If you talk to any of our Alumni, they will tell you that a lot of the problems that students face today, are the same problems that they experienced back when they were students.
UNO has always been a commuter campus. We have strengthened our student presence with the development of residential buildings, but how are we reaching the students who don’t live on campus? How do we develop pride in our University if so many students don’t feel included? Another issue is parking. Parking is a century old issue, and continues to be a major issue every year.
This year, we saw students ignite their passion on this issue and come together to bring about change. If only students came together like that more often on other issues, we would see a major shift in the culture of our campus. I am so proud to be a Maverick, and I want all of my constituents to feel the same.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
Through my involvement in leadership roles on- and off-campus, I have developed a strong sense of responsibility. As the External Relations Liaison, I was in charge of recruiting students to serve on various committees across campus. I was responsible for setting up and conducting all interviews, and making sure all seats were filled. I was successful in filling all seats with a highly impressive and diverse group of students, because of my dedication to fulfil my role.
Through this position, I was also an advocate, and connector for the five student agencies within Student Government. I gave each agency my attention and was able to facilitate collaboration between agency directors to build a stronger relationship between them.
In addition to this, I have spent the past year pouring into a stellar group of Freshman leaders. I have the distinct pleasure of serving as the organizer and facilitator of the Freshman Leadership Council. This provides me a unique opportunity to share my experiences as a campus leader to our future campus leaders. I am responsible for recruiting and retaining members, as well as facilitating weekly meetings to encourage these students to be leaders in their own way.
I would only hope that they have learned a lot from me, but I think this experience has given me an advantage to continue leading on this campus as I have been able to learn so much from them. I feel that I have been groomed for the Regent position, because I have been so highly involved in this work since I first stepped foot on campus, and I am ready to bridge the gap across all of the experiences that I've had, and use them to better the student experience here at UNO.
