Justin is from Grand Island, NE and is studying bioinformatics, mathematics, chemistry and computer science. His junior year leadership experience includes being a member the Maverick Club for Bioinformatics. His senior year, he led a group of students in organic chemistry and a variety of mathematical courses. His assistance led to these students raising their grades and passing the courses. His junior year internship experience includes working at Union Pacific in the OSS department, where he provided technical phone and computer support. His senior year, he is working in the bioinformatics lab at UNO with Dr. Kate Cooper, researching Next-Generation Sequencing technology tools. In this position, he is responsible for identifying new online sequencing tools and testing them on data sets. His research experience includes researching high-throughput sequencing, specifically persister cells that resist antibiotics. In the spring of 2019, he received a FUSE grant to evaluate bioinformatics tools in a pipeline used to detect variants in sequences. The goal is to find the most efficient pipeline to achieve this task. He is currently writing a research paper to submit to nationally recognized bioinformatics conferences. His career interests include bioinformatics and mathematical research, with a focus on the programming aspect of each.
