The Common Reader Experience Committee is pleased to announce Tara Westover's Educated: A Memoir as the 2019 Common Reader. This autobiography details the journey of a young woman as she struggles to get an education and how that education helps her formulate her own ideas - a journey of grit, courage, and sacrifice.
The Common Reader Experience eases incoming students’ transition to college through small-group discussion, curricular assignments, and co-curricular programming based around a single book.
To that end, we are inviting interested faculty, staff, and students to lead small group discussions this coming Fall 2019. To kick-off the CRE experience this year, discussion groups will be held on campus on Sunday, August 25 at 3 P.M., with students and discussion leaders then attending New Student Convocation.
Read the Common Reader Experience book, Tara Westover’s Educated: A Memoir.
Attend a discussion leader workshop (lunch included) on Friday, August 23, 2019 from 11:30 A.M. - 1 P.M. in the CEC 230/231. This workshop will provide you a series of notes and questions to help you get the conversation started and keep it rolling.
Lead a small group discussion with a group of first-year students for about an hour on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 3 P.M. We will provide you with topics and tools you will need to lead a discussion. You are these students’ first academic contact, so it’s a great opportunity to connect to them and make them feel confident and comfortable in UNO’s academic environment.
If you’re interested in signing up to serve as a discussion group leader, please complete the volunteer form.
