Panel Discussion Explores Creativity and Healing

OMAHA – A cancer physician, his patient, an AIDS educator and a former refugee will come together for “Creativity and Healing,” a panel discussion hosted by KANEKO-UNO Creativity Library and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Writer’s Workshop.
The discussion is set for Thursday, March 31 from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m., at the KANEKO-UNO Library (1111 Jones St). The event is free and open to the public; it will include an audience Q&A. Media are welcome to attend.
The panel is part of the ongoing series PROCESS #2, which brings together professionals and students from a variety of disciplines to explore the creative process.
Panelists
Dr. William Lydiatt, director of Head & Neck Surgery at UNMC, who, in collaboration with artist Mark Gilbert and Dr. Virginia Aita, formulated a portraiture project that involved numerous seriously ill patients and the caregivers, and that resulted in the Bemis Center exhibit “Portraits of Care.”
James Van Arsdall, professor of Political Science at Metro Community College and a patient of Dr. Lydiatt’s since 2001.
Andrew Aleman, PLMHP, of Omaha Integrative Care. Aleman works with youth/young adults, as well as LGBTQ+ individuals. He previously served as Community Engagement Supervisor and HIV/AIDS educator for Nebraska AIDS Project.
Manger Baw grew up in a Thailand/Myanmar Border refugee camp and is now a scholar in the UNO Thompson Learning Community, majoring in Sociology and working on numerous service projects.
Anna Monardo, a novelist and professor in UNO’s Writer’s Workshop, will moderate the discussion.
The KANEKO-UNO Library aims “to inspire people to expand their knowledge within an atmosphere of flexible learning.” UNO’s Writer’s Workshop is a studio-based BFA program in Creative Writing.
