During the month of March, the profession of athletic training celebrates National Athletic Training Month. Athletic trainers are part of a team of health care professionals. Athletic trainers work under the direction and in collaboration with physicians working with physically active populations through all stages of life to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate injuries and medical conditions. Although they share similar knowledge, athletic trainers should not be confused with personal trainers who focus on fitness and conditioning.
UNO employs athletic trainers in a variety of areas on campus. Our athletic department has four full-time athletic trainers and two graduate assistant athletic trainers that work with 280 student-athletes that comprise 15 Division 1 athletic teams to prevent, evaluate and rehabilitate athletic injuries and illnesses.
The Wellness Center is home to the Injury Prevention & Care Clinic in HPER 108. This clinic is staffed by two athletic trainers which offer a variety of services to students, faculty and staff, as well as public members of the Wellness Center.
Finally, the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in the College of Education supports two different accredited athletic training programs, an undergraduate and graduate professional program. These programs are led by three faculty members who are certified athletic trainers. Each program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Currently, there are 53 students enrolled in the two programs.
Most people recognize athletic trainers on the sidelines of a sporting event at a school, college, or professional sports team. However, athletic trainers can also be found in physician clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, military, law enforcement and industrial settings.
