OMAHA - The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Department of Gerontology is encouraging everyone to be thoughtful about their final days with the return of the popular “Begin With the End in Mind” series.
The public is invited to attend two sessions on end-of-life planning that will take place on Friday, March 11, and Friday, April 22, respectively, and feature local experts who will also be able to answer attendee questions.
Begin with the End in Mind events are free and open to the public, but require an RSVP. Both sessions will take place from 1 - 2 p.m. in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service building, Room 132.
To RSVP, please contact Maria Sorick at 402.554.2272, or by email at unogero@unomaha.edu.
Estate Planning
On March 11, estate attorney Ron Jensen, J.D., will be on campus to discuss how people can prevent financial abuse with an effective estate plan.
Earlier this year, U.S. News and World Report published a story detailing that estate-based financial abuse, while not common, is a real concern and, on average, can cost victims $30,000 with one in 10 victims have reported losing more than $100,000.
Jensen, a nationally-respected attorney with Baird Holm in Omaha, received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1976 and has spent the past four decades specializing in elder law. He is also a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the UNO Gerontology Advisory Committee and Omaha Estate Planning Council.
Palliative Care
On April 22, Domingo Maynes, III, M.D., will discuss palliative care, or healthcare designed to primarily relieve pain.
Earning his medical degree from Stanford University, Maynes is currently a clinician for CHI Health and is board certified in internal medicine.
While palliative care is something that can be prescribed at any age, there is a often a higher need for such remedies when someone is facing terminal or chronic illnesses, which disproportionately affect older adults.
