University of Nebraska at Omaha Housing, under the direction of Bill Pickett, recently won the Community Service Program award for their entire Midwest Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (MACURH) region for the month of October.
The award was given for UNO Housing's very successful "Reverse Trick-or-Treat" program in which 3600 non-perishable items were donated along with more than $200 for the Maverick Food Pantry.
The idea for the "Reverse Trick-or-Treat" program stemmed from increased utilization of the Maverick Food Pantry, and supply not meeting the demand for assistance. While donations to the pantry came in at a steady rate, but not at the rate the pre-packed food packages were requested from the approximately 100 patrons of the food pantry. Realizing the need for more donations, the UNO Student Involvement subdivision wanted to not only collect items to stock the pantry, but to also raise awareness about its availability to the UNO community.
On Halloween, volunteers traveled around campus “trick-or-treating” to collect donations from university buildings, offices and departments. Volunteers were divided into two groups: "Hamburger Helper" and "Campbell’s Chunky Soup," which coordinated with two costumes worn by group leaders. Thanks to the support of the UNO community, the program has helped to stock the shelves of the food pantry as we enter the holiday season. The "Reverse Trick-or-Treat" program will go on to compete at the national level in coming months.
About the Maverick Food Pantry
In August 2013, UNO created the Maverick Food Pantry. Located on MBSC 1st Floor, the pantry is open to all currently enrolled UNO students, as well as faculty and staff. The Food Pantry collaborates with services and departments across campus to support the UNO Community’s growth in all 8 Dimensions of Wellness. The Maverick Food Pantry also helps those in need by connecting them with resources in the greater Omaha area for long-term support, and increases public awareness about food insecurity and nutrition. Whether you wish to pick up a food package, donate food items, or volunteer your time to the food pantry, we welcome your participation!
The mission of UNO’s Maverick Food Pantry is to contribute to UNO’s culture of caring by providing food to those in immediate need and connecting them with resources in the greater Omaha area for long-term support. We are dedicated to eliminating hunger in the UNO community and increasing awareness of food insecurity and nutrition.
