Additional Information
STEPs History
Ben has been with STEPs as an Administrative Assistant since July 2019 and has helped edit many STEPs reports, all of which can be found here, on STEPs’ Digital Commons.
Education
Raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ben graduated May 2015 from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, with a BA in English & Literary Studies. During that time, he not only increased his interest in how we tell stories, but how clear language and storytelling apply to everyday communication. In every job since, he seeks to use these skills to serve others. As of the fall of 2019, Ben is pursuing an MS in Secondary Education concentrating in English, with an additional endorsement for the School Library.
Professional Background
From the summer of 2015 till the spring of 2018 Ben fundraised to intern with Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) on the campus of University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During that time he cared for his students’ wellbeing, and developed his logistical and interpersonal skills, further rooting in Nebraska. From the spring of 2018 through the winter of 2019, Ben worked as a temporary research assistant with UNL’s Agronomy Department, assisting with the collection and entry of field data, plant sample processing, and editing reports for diverse research projects from Soybean Management Field Days to corn ear malformation issues. Despite the various jobs, each one has taught Ben new things about logistical support, meaningful personal interactions, and being a hard worker. He is excited to serve STEPs, Omaha, and the broader area through his work here.
Professional Interests
Aside from his perennial passions in reading, writing, and editing a variety of pieces, any opportunities that allow Ben to help others is of interest. He has always felt a draw to educational issues including equal access, tutoring, curriculum, and technology, which are being developed further in his Masters work.
Something Personal
Ben loves to read, hike, and write and perform music with his friends (when he can shove down his fight-or-flight response).
