Practicum and COVID-19
Policies and Procedures for a Successful Practicum Experience during COVID-19
Through discussions with Dean Bartle and our social work program leaders, the Grace Abbott School of Social Work is allowing students scheduled for practicum to begin, provided the agency is open and the supervisor(s) are in agreement with the student’s proposed start date.
Based on the information we have right now, the following factors and stipulations must be followed:
• Students must have approval from the agency supervisor. If the agency does not give the student approval to begin, the student may not begin practicum until the agency gives the student permission. This includes any work-from-home practicum.
• Students must follow the agency protocol regarding COVID-19 and safety procedures outlined by the agency
• Students must follow the CDC protocolregarding COVID-19 and safety procedures, i.e. wearing a mask while in public, washing hands, social distancing, etc. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/index.html
• Students may wish to delay the start of their practicum due to COVID-19 related issues. If so, students must alert the practicum office, their academic advisor, and their agency.
UNO Grace Abbott School of Social Work students are obligated to abide by the school’s Academic Policies & Standards as well as to follow the NASW Code of Ethics. Additionally, practicum students represent the University, the GASSW and the agency, and therefore are expected to practice ethical responsibility to their peers, colleagues, clients and community members during this current pandemic.
Students are encouraged to pass along this information to their Practicum supervisors, and continue to watch closely for emails regarding further instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please direct any questions to the Practicum Office or Faculty Liaison.
