2017 Jailhouse Scramble a Big Success
The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice’s recent Jailhouse Scramble, an annual fundraiser which was founded 22 years ago, was a huge success. The event, which was held September 15 at Tiburon Golf Course, drew more than 80 golfers and netted almost $7,000 for student scholarship support.
Gaylene Armstrong, the director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, was thrilled with the wonderful turnout of both players and sponsors who helped underwrite the event. “This year’s event was fabulous,” Armstrong said. “We had more teams competing than in years past, we gained some wonderful new corporate sponsors and realized higher levels of sponsorship from many of our loyal sponsors who have been supportive of our mission for years,” she added.
Some of the money raised from the event has been used to endow the Dennis Roncek Memorial Fellowship fund. This fund, which was created in honor of the late SCCJ professor Dr. Dennis “Denn” Roncek, provides scholarships to UNO graduate students studying criminology and criminal justice.
Plans are already underway for next year’s Jailhouse Scramble, which will be held Friday, September 14th at Tiburon Golf Course in Gretna. “It will be difficult to top what we pulled off this year,” Armstrong said, “but we’re definitely going to try. The scholarship support of our students is critical and the opportunity for justice professionals, sponsors and others to network with students and friends of the SCCJ at the event is priceless.”
