Santa-Maria has worked in the human services field for more than 10 years in a variety of roles including direct care, managing clinical programs, as well as community development. He also has a background in managing human resources departments and business operations. He is involved with community groups such as the South Omaha Neighborhood Association and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He has developed pilot programs to help and support the community in areas such as truancy reduction, development of individual and family self-efficacy, as well as introducing behavioral interventions to impact academic success.
