In the era of Big Data, real-world application data usually exhibit unprecedented features such as Variety, Velocity, and Volume. Specifically, nowadays we have to deal with heterogeneous data of different formats and data quality, organize data in large scale, and analyze data efficiently and accurately. Therefore, in real applications such as sensor networks, location-based services, moving object search, biological graph databases, social networks, and road networks, it is very critical to extract, integrate, model, and query such large-scale, heterogeneous, and unreliable data, with the quality guarantees.
In this talk, I will cover the topics of large-scale probabilistic data management, including the probabilistic data model for data from heterogeneous and unreliable data sources, formalization of probabilistic queries over such a data model, and efficient query processing over large-scale and probabilistic data. In particular, I will focus on some important queries over large-scale probabilistic data, and present a general framework for efficiently and effectively query processing. In particular, effective pruning methods and indexing mechanisms will be presented, which can greatly reduce the search space of the problems.
Dr. Xiang Lian received the Bachelor degree from the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Nanjing University, in 2003, and the PhD degree in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in 2009. He works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 2009 to 2011. He is now an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Texas - Pan American. His research interests include query processing over (1) Probabilistic, Inconsistent, and Uncertain Databases, (2) Uncertain and Certain Graph Databases, (3) Streaming Time Series Databases, and (4) Spatial Databases. He has published more than 55 conference/journal papers and 1 book in the area of databases. He serves as PC members and/or reviewers in more than 30 conferences and journals. He is the proceeding co-chair of ACM SIGMOD conference in 2014 and 2015.
Dr. Lian is a candidate for the Big Data faculty position at the College of IS&T.
